Coverage
What this checks
- Whether each link still opens, following redirects from short links such as amzn.to, a.co, geni.us and bit.ly.
- Whether the page at the end is gone (404 or 410), erroring, or from a service that has shut down.
- For Amazon links: whether the product page says "Currently unavailable", and whether your Associates tag (tag=) is in the link.
- Which affiliate network or link service each link uses, including Amazon, Geniuslink, Impact, Awin, CJ, ShareASale, Rakuten, Skimlinks, LTK and ShopMy.
What it can't check
- It can't see your commission reports, so it can't tell you whether clicks are being credited.
- Amazon sometimes blocks automated checks. When that happens the link shows as "Check by hand" rather than guessing.
- It checks a page as a visitor in the US would see it. Stock and availability can differ by country.
Troubleshooting
Why affiliate links break, and how to fix each one
| Cause | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The product was discontinued or removed | The product page returns 404, or Amazon shows "Looking for something?" | Link to the current model or an in-stock alternative. |
| The product is out of stock | The page works but says "Currently unavailable" | Swap in an alternative until it's back, or link to another retailer. |
| The service behind the link shut down | Every link on that domain fails or returns 410 Gone | Move the products to a page you control and replace the link. |
| The link lost your affiliate tag | The link works but has no tag=, often after copying from the browser bar | Rebuild it from your affiliate dashboard (for Amazon, SiteStripe). |
| A retailer changed its URLs or left a network | Redirects to a homepage or error page | Get a fresh link from the retailer's current affiliate program. |
| The domain expired | The site doesn't respond at all | Replace the link. If it was your own domain, renew it. |
Prevention
Stop links breaking in old videos
A video can earn for years, but the product links in its description rarely last that long. Fixing them means editing every description by hand. The alternative is to put one link in the video that points to a page you control. With Setup101, that page is a setup: the gear you used, each with your affiliate link (on the Pro plan). When a product is discontinued, you swap it in the setup, and every video that links there is up to date.
